Winter 2010

Classes Ill be taking:
History of Western Civ: 102
Physical Geology 210
Classic Movies 135/365

The Classic Movies class is full but Im going to show up day of and try to get permission to be in it anyway. Ive got great reviews on the teacher and Ron is already registered for the class so if I get it, its going to be a great hit. Its a 135 and 365 level class mixed into the same movie showing/class time I wonder if there will be any difference in the expected work load....

I dont know what to expect in the Physical Geography class. All I know is that the professor, Lafrenz, has high reviews and my room mate sean took a class with him last term and really enjoyed himself.

History of Western Civ 102 will be a continuation of what Ive done this past term in 101. Im taking it with the same professor, Galety, who I generally like. Im looking forward to this class a lot.

Lost Comments

David,

I found these comments about your paper (the dream paper) and realized they never got to you. Thought I'd send them this way.

I think you're working from a strong place - playing at detachment for the sake of perspective/empathy for others is profound work, and your desire reflects a maturity that belies your years. I just want to remind you that it's in our nature to operate out of egocentricity; monks and nuns make their life's work out of what you're talking about, so there really is no "default setting", is there? Maintaining awareness/consciousness/detachment is a lifelong journey, a destination we return to over and over. You know this, I think; however, I get the feeling you want to land on the perfect perspective and just stay....but humans aren't like that, are we?

In terms of education, there's so much to learn/become passionate about. You can begin with your writing. You need to work on comma placement, and compound words so your lovely ideas can be expressed at the level they deserve.

cheers,

Wendy

First thoughts on WR115

First thoughts on WR115

The class seems pretty interesting. Like a more fun version of the writing aspects taught in Ways of Knowing.

The teacher is a total hippy. Which is nice. I like her as a teacher thus far. I can tell this is her first time teaching, her lesson plans dont last for the duration of the class. We've been let out early twice now. I think she has been hoping that we would have more in class discussion but our class doesnt seem super interested.

To her merit.... I do like the tuxedo shirt look. It works well for her. And she brings a mason jar of home brewed tea. Proof positive that I'll get along with her.

To her demerit... she doesnt like people to use computers in her class and seems to think that most professors feel the same way. In my experience thus far most teachers dont care at all.
She seems unprofessional in some of her manarisms but I think thats just due to her being a new teacher.

EDIT:
Almost forgot to mention, there is a gorgeous girl in this class. Going to try to get to know her.

Summer Term

Summer time and Ill be taking two classes.

HUM399-Vampires in Film and Fiction. Its a web based class where we read books and watch movies then talk about it online.

PHL 399-Philosophy of Sex and Love. A friend of mine said the instructor is really good and apparently sexuality classes are life changing in college.

So there you have it. Not really necessary classes by any means, but I want to have a few fun summer courses.

End of Spring Term

UNST Ways of Knowing A
Philosophy of Life and Death Issues A
History of the French Revolution C

3.33 BABY!

Could have gotten an A in the history class but I screwed around early term and had a bad test. Also didnt do a bunch of the online discussion questions, Im just not used to thinking about getting online for homework. Well Ive learned and it wont trip me up again. I should have had a 4.0. Ill get it next time.

End of the term

Here I am. Done with FRINQ for good. Ive just got a paper in history to write and two finals next week. I just finished a paper for philosophy on mind-body dualism. Since I havent posted anything here for a while Ill go ahead and post it just as something to have been added.

Body Self Dualism

In this paper I intend to prove there is a separation between the body and self using Descartes’ indivisibility argument. The argument is as follows.
P1) If the self is identical to the body, then whatever is true of the body is true of the self (and vice versa).
P2) It is not the case that whatever is true of the body is true of the self
C) Therefore, the self is not identical to the body.
I will argue that all of the premises are true using those who have returned to life after being clinically declared dead as examples.
If the self is identical to the body in the sense that our existence is limited to the physical experiences and chemical combinations that make up our body and brain fuctions; then it follows that when our body dies so then does our selves as body and brain functions cease to be.
That, however, is not true. There have been hundreds of reported cases of people being declared dead that had no recordable brain waves who have returned to life. There is a very good example in Pam Reynolds who was being operated on for an artery aneurysm in the brain. While being monitored by EEG that showed no brain function she was able to hear very specific conversations the doctors had and even see the doctor drill into her own skull from a raised viewpoint looking down on herself. Pam found herself pulled towards a light where she saw many dead relatives and had conversations with them. Her dead uncle had pushed her back into her body after saying it wasn’t yet her time.
Pams heart and brain functions had comepletely stopped, there was no response from her cerebral cortex, she was dead in every sense. If her mind and body were the same thing her mind should have dispersed when her brain flatlined. Since her soul, or self, was not dead while her body was, we can see that whatever is true of the body is not necessarily true of the self. Therefore the self is not identical to the body.

C's

This term I have had a hard time following the in class readings. Its not that they are difficult, I just can seem to find a place to get in the zone long enough to do them. I used to use the living room but jenell goes straight to the tv when she gets home from work. There's no room in the computer room to read. I used to use my room, but lately I just come home and pass the fuck out if Im in my bed for an hour. I should probably start just going to the library after the days classes. Take a few extra hours to do everything. Hopefully the new appartment will be more homework friendly.

Spring Term

Wow, I didnt post anything at all during winter term

OK! So Spring term Im taking:

UNST146c - Ways of Knowing - Professor Magis
This professor is a real slave driver. Strictest teacher I have ever had.
I was so pissed this morning. Our assignment was to read this introduction
to modern social theory, deconstruct it and summarize it in the authors opinion.
I did it, but didnt wake up in time for class today. Of course dont you know she
doesnt accept any late assignments. Assignments are considered late if they are
turned in after the first 15 minutes of class. >:( I did that stupid assignment and
cant even turn it in.

PHL313U - Life and Death Issues - Professor Carrasquillo
This philosophy class is going to focus on three major areas; abortion, euthanasia and infanticide.
I can already tell Im really going to like this class. The instructor is really into this kind of thing and it gives me a rare opportunity to actually research some of the information regarding the subject matter.

HST360U - The French Revolution and Napoleon - Professor Stone
Im excited for this class. I dont know much about the french revolution or napoleon. The professor uses a lot of art and maps from the time to help tell the history. Personally I LOVE maps. I want to have a mural of a map of the world in my library... when I get a room to call my library. The only downside to this class is that its in the Unitus building and Ive only got 10 minutes to get there from the Cramer which pretty much guarantees Ill always get a shitty seat.

Lots of reading this term, not a whole ton of homework. Alright, time to focus, put on a cup of tea and study my way till summer time!
